GEAR UP – What is it?
GEAR UP is a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and stands for: Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. The purpose of the program is to provide information to students and parents on all aspects of college admissions, financial aid, scholarships, etc. for the purpose of increasing the number of students who attend a university, community college, or technology center upon graduation from high school. In Tennessee, the most recent GEAR UP grants were awarded to 15 county schools systems through a competitive bid process. The Henderson County and Lexington City grant focuses on current 8th grade students in Bargerton, Beaver, Pin Oak, South Haven, Westover, and Lexington Middle School.
How long will GEAR UP services be available in Henderson County?
GEAR UP is a 7 year program and provides services to the Class of 2018 until their first year post high school. Services are also provide to each year's senior class.
What specific services will GEAR UP provide?
Although a new services will be offered each year, some general examples of include: career planning, financial aid planning, college visits, special speakers, and other events designed to highlight the advantages of furthering education after high school.
