Agriculture is such an integral part of our national and local economy. Today, the Henderson County Youth Leadership class learned many of the different roles involved in running a farm.

They started their day at the UT Ag Extension office with Mr. Brian White giving them a general overview of the importance of agriculture, the costs involved, many myths about farming, and how agriculture has changed in the last several years with technology.

Then, they visited Co-op and learned about the role that they play in supporting farmers in Henderson County and across the region. They were able to hear how technology helps them increase their supply of many items, like fertilizer.

Next, they headed to Sunset Valley Farm where Mr. Brian and Mrs. Melissa Muetze spoke about Agri-Tourism while the students ate Tolley Farm beef burgers.

When they left there, they headed to Darden and ended their day on the Youngerman farm where Mr. Alex and his father-in-law spoke with us about the crop they raise, where it goes once harvested, and what it’s used for. For the highlight of the day, everyone got to take part in the harvest by riding on the combine and tractor. Students were able to see everything that they had learned throughout the day in action.

A special thank you to Mr. Brian White with the UT Ag Extension office for organizing this day for us.
