Students from the Henderson County Youth Leadership program representing both Lexington High School (LHS) and Scotts Hill High School (SHHS) traveled to the Tennessee State Capitol today for a hands-on learning experience in state government.
During their visit, students had the opportunity to meet with State Representatives Brock Martin and Kirk Haston, as well as Senator Ed Jackson, Secretary of State Tre Hargett, Comptroller Jason Mumpowers, and Deputy Commissioner of Ag Bryan King. They spoke with the group about their roles in government and answered questions about the legislative process.
Students also observed real legislative activity by sitting in on subcommittee meetings held in the Cordell Hull Building. The experience allowed them to see firsthand how bills are discussed and reviewed before moving forward in the legislative process. Then, students participated in a mock legislative session inside the Capitol’s House chamber. During the session, they practiced debating issues and voting on legislation, giving them a realistic look at how lawmakers conduct official business.
The trip provided Henderson County Youth Leadership students with a valuable opportunity to learn more about state government and civic engagement while experiencing the legislative process in action.
