Today Mrs. Mallory’s first grade class began learning about habitats. Students first learned the three things a habitat needs to provide in order for a living thing to survive there: food, water, and shelter. Then students discussed what could be considered a shelter for different living things and how different species have different requirements. To wrap up the lesson, students explored the environment around our playground to identify as many habitats and sources of food and shelter for different animals as they could find. They found so many possible shelters including the shed (where we see our friendly groundhog), culverts, rocks, trees, leaves, holes, and more! To wrap up the adventure, students helped pick up our school “habitat” to show respect for our school, our friends, and for the different animals we share the area with! Learning targets: I can explain what a habitat is. I can show an understanding of the word shelter. I can identify characteristics of a habitat.
