Students in Mrs. Young’s Health Science class are officially one step closer to the front lines of healthcare. Last week, the classroom transformed into a simulated clinical environment as students tackled the critical protocols of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
For those pursuing careers in nursing, medicine, or emergency services, mastering isolation precautions is a fundamental skill. Students practiced the specific sequences required for different types of hospital isolation, including:
Contact Precautions: Preventing the spread of germs by touch.
Droplet Precautions: Guarding against respiratory germs that travel short distances.
Airborne Precautions: Utilizing specialized masks for germs that linger in the air.
Under Mrs. Young’s guidance, students put on gowns, masks, face shields, and gloves, ensuring every seal was tight and every inch of skin was protected. The real challenge, however, was the removal process, where students had to demonstrate they could strip the gear without touching the "dirty" exterior surfaces. Mrs. Lindsay Young said: "They aren't just learning about healthcare; they are practicing the actual safety standards that keep our hospitals running."
