Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Groups that had been fighting individually against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness and the extinction of wildlife united on Earth Day around these shared common values. Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, urban dwellers and farmers, business and labor leaders. By the end of 1970, the first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of other first-of-their-kind environmental laws, including the National Environmental Education Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the Clean Air Act. Two years later congress passed the Clean Water Act. This year's theme for Earth Day is PLANET VS PLASTICS! Planet vs. Plastics unites students, parents, businesses, governments, churches, unions, individuals, and NGOs in an unwavering commitment to call for the end of plastics for the sake of human and planetary health, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of plastics by 2040 and an ultimate goal of building a plastic-free future for generations to come. Ms. Veronica and Ms. Renee’s PreK is learning about life cycles. They are watching caterpillars turn into butterflies, have planted flowers, are growing grass, and germinating beans in our greenhouses. We are enjoying the flowers from SHHS FFA’s greenhouse! The kids are learning about all the things they might be able to plant one day in the greenhouses when they are older. 🌷🐛🌼🦋

In Pre-K, we have been learning about Letter Qq this week. Ms. U can make works on her own like fun, sun, and run. However, Mr. Q needs Ms. U to form words like quiz, quit, and quarter. Mr. Q and Ms. U promise to stay together through quicksand, earthquakes, and during quiet times. Following our wedding, we had a reception and dance party. It will be a special day to remember.

Parents, I am writing to let you know of a temporary change happening in your child’s 2nd-grade classroom. Due to events beyond our control, we need to move Ms. Tina Crews to third grade over the next few weeks. The class she will be working with is directly across the hall from your child’s 2nd-grade classroom. This will allow Ms. Crews to monitor progress with her 2nd graders while overseeing the third-grade classroom during these crucial weeks for that grade. Ms. Leslie Bartholomew will be in your child’s second-grade classroom each day carrying on with the daily routine. I have confidence in both of these ladies and know your child is in good hands. Thank you for your understanding.
