Last but not least is FLOOD FRIDAY! Living this close to the Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers, flooding is one of the most common weather situations we have to be alert to. With all of the branches that come off of the two major rivers, any area in West Tennessee can quickly become a flood area. One of the most important things that is drilled into our heads: TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN! Facts and tips about floods: Ninety percent of all natural disasters involve flooding. Floods Are Now the #1 Natural Disaster on the Planet. In 1927 the Mississippi's levees could not hold back the water from record precipitation and 27,000 square miles flooded over seven states resulting in a death toll of 246. A car can be taken away in as little as 2 feet of water.

THUNDERSTORM THURSDAY! Living close to tornado alley, we are prone to be on the receiving end of an enormous amount of thunderstorms. Despite their small size, all thunderstorms are dangerous. Every thunderstorm produces lightning, which kills more people each year than tornadoes. Heavy rain from thunderstorms can lead to flash flooding. Strong winds, hail, and tornadoes are also dangers associated with some thunderstorms. Interesting facts: Tennessee typically sees between 50 and 60 thunderstorms a year, depending on the location within the state. The southern part of the United States has the highest number of average thunderstorms each year. The odds of being struck by lightning each year are less than 1 in a million. From 2006 through 2022, lightning caused an average of 27 deaths per year in the United States.
