Winter Storm Wednesday! Living in the south, we do not experience winter like our northern state friends, but we are not immune to all of winter's dangerous conditions. Especially in the last few years we have seen dangerously low temperatures and in January we experienced a hefty amount of snow. Being prepared and staying safe during cold temperatures is something we always need to be prepared for. Interesting Facts: Winter storms are often as powerful or more so than hurricanes The coldest temperature ever recorded in the state measured -32ºF in Mountain City. The most snow ever recorded in the state: Mar 14, 1993 – Sevier County: 30 inches Winter storms actually take more lives and do more property damages than do hurricanes. More people die of the cold than of tornadoes and hurricanes combined.

The second severe weather event is the TORNADO!!! A tornado is a narrow, violently rotating column of air that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground. Tornadoes can be among the most violent phenomena of all atmospheric storms we experience. Interesting facts: Tornado Alley is a nickname invented by the media to refer to a broad area of relatively high tornado occurrence in the central United States. Tornadoes can happen at any time of year. Tornadoes can also happen at any time of day or night, but most tornadoes occur between 4–9 p.m. The most destructive tornadoes occur from supercells, which are rotating thunderstorms with a well-defined radar circulation called a mesocyclone. The longest record for a tornado being on the ground is the Tri-State tornado, occurring on March 18, 1925, with a path length of 151 to 235 mi. Most tornadoes in a month: April, 2011 : 773 tornadoes Tornado with the strongest winds: Oklahoma City (May 3, 1999): 318 MPH

Our first severe weather event is the EARTHQUAKE! An earthquake is what happens when two blocks of the earth suddenly slip past one another. The surface where they slip is called the fault or fault plane. The location below the Earth’s surface where the earthquake starts is called the hypocenter, and the location directly above it on the surface of the earth is called the epicenter. Interesting facts: It is estimated that there are 500,000 detectable earthquakes in the world each year. 100,000 of those can be felt, and 100 of them cause damage. Some very powerful earthquakes occurred along the New Madrid fault in the Mississippi Valley in 1811-1812. Reelfoot Lake is an 18,000- acre natural area located in Lake and Obion Counties in northwest Tennessee. The lake was created by a series of violent New Madrid fault zone earthquakes in the winter of 1811-1812. Alaska is the most earthquake-prone state and one of the most seismically active regions in the world.

Tennessee's Severe Weather Awareness Week (SWAW) will take place February 25-March 2, 2024. "Severe Weather Awareness Week is our opportunity to prepare before disaster strikes." This week students throughout the school will learn about different severe weather events that could affect our area. They will learn about causes, strategies to prepare, and ways to stay safe during these events. We are so excited about the week and all the interesting fun things happening in the building.
