Why School Attendance Matters

Showing up each day makes a difference! Regular school attendance is one of the strongest predictors of student success, both in the classroom and later in life. When students attend school consistently, they build strong learning habits, develop critical social skills, and stay on track academically.

Missing just a few days here and there can quickly add up. Research shows that students who are chronically absent—missing 10% or more of the school year—are more likely to fall behind in reading and math, struggle to stay engaged, and face greater challenges graduating on time.

Good attendance also prepares students for the future. Being present and on time teaches responsibility, commitment, and time management—skills that post-secondary schools and employers value highly.

Parents and guardians play a critical role in supporting attendance. Encouraging routines, scheduling appointments outside of school hours, and communicating with teachers when challenges arise can all help keep students in class and learning.

At Henderson County Schools, we are committed to helping every student thrive. By making school attendance a top priority, families and schools can work together to give our children the best chance at success—today and in the future.

🎾🎾🎾 Middle school tennis tryouts will be on Tuesday from 7 to 8 pm at LHS tennis courts, and Thursday's tryouts will be from 7 to 8 pm at Scotts Hill Tennis courts. We are doing this to avoid the heat index. Thank you all for your understanding.🎾🎾🎾

✂️PRE-K Openings in Henderson County Schools✏️

All children who will be four (4) years old on or before August 15, 2025, are eligible to apply for PreK for the 2025-2026 school year.

Requested documents for enrollment:
-Proof of Income (ex: check stub, income tax return, public assistance case, etc.)
-Proof of age such as birth certificate, other medical documents
-Social Security Card
-Proof of Immunizations on a Tennessee Certificate of Immunization form from the Health Department or a Physician’s office
-Copy of Physical Examination (within 1 calendar year)
-Two (2) Proofs of County Residence (E911 address) (ex: electric bill, water bill, etc.)

Voluntary PreK (VPK) is an income-based program and priority will be given to those families that qualify. Completing the Henderson County PreK application packet does not guarantee enrollment in the PreK program. Non-income eligible students are placed on a waiting list once all paperwork is complete. Per the VPK grant guidelines, non-income eligible students will be notified mid-September informing them of their waitlist status.

Lookie, Lookie!! Another little Bear has found her way back home! We are so excited to have Makayla Britt join the Westover Family! She will be serving as a paraprofessional in the CDC class! Help us give her a great big Bear Country welcome! Hi, I’m Makayla Britt. I grew up right here in Lexington and attended Westover from K–8 before graduating from Lexington High School in 2023. I’m currently pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Special Education, and have spent the past two school years substitute teaching mainly at Westover. I’m so excited to officially be back at Westover and part of the team! 🩵💛🐻 Welcome home, Makayla!

Meet Mrs. Tiffany, The newest member of our VPK program! Help us make her feel welcome to our Bear Family! 🩵💛🐻 Hello Westover families! My name is Tiffany Matheny, and I’m so excited to join the Westover Elementary team as a Pre-K paraprofessional this year. While this is my first official year as a para, I’ve spent the past year substitute teaching in county schools, which gave me valuable experience working with students of all ages. I am happily married and proud to be the mom of five amazing children—three of whom attend Westover and two who are students at LHS. As both a parent and now a staff member, I’m deeply committed to supporting our students and helping them grow and succeed in a safe, caring, and fun learning environment. I’m looking forward to a wonderful year ahead, getting to know our students, staff, and families. Let’s go Bears! 🐻
