🎉Henderson County Schools Principal Appreciation Month Spotlight! 🎉
Today, we’re celebrating our amazing principal, Mrs. Renee Maynard, at Westover Elementary School, by asking a few fun questions to get to know her better! 👇
📚 School Life
⭐ If you could teach any class for a day, which one would it be?
“If I could teach any class for a day, it would be Reading.”
⭐ Who was your favorite teacher growing up?
“My favorite teacher growing up was Mr. Gene Milam.”
⭐ What’s your favorite school tradition or event?
“The 8th Grade Meal and Walk is incredibly special to me. We’ve watched these students grow (many since Pre-K), and seeing them make that final stroll down our hallways always brings me to tears. A million memories rush through my mind in those moments. It’s so hard to let them go, but my heart swells with pride knowing they’re ready to spread their wings and fly.”
❤️ Personal & Reflective
💡 What inspired you to become a principal?
“My inspiration to become a principal came from a deep desire to provide for teachers and students what I needed when I was in the classroom. I was a squirrely, squirmy kid who couldn’t pay attention, be quiet, or be still. I had big emotions and carried a lot of fear. No matter what my parents did to lift me up, I never truly believed in myself. There was always someone smarter, prettier, faster, stronger — and I often felt invisible.
I became an educator because I never wanted another child to feel that way. I wanted every student to be seen, to feel important, and to know that they matter. I wanted to lead by example — to show that even the fidgety, fiery ones can grow into confident leaders who make a difference.
I loved my time in the classroom, but my heart kept calling me to reach further ... to have a broader impact on more teachers, more students, and more lives. That’s what being a principal allows me to do every single day.”
⭐ A Favorite Memory:
“One of my favorite memories happened during prom when two very special students were crowned Prom King and Queen. The moment they stepped onto the dance floor, it was like the whole world lit up. They danced with pure joy. For the rest of the night, they were literally walking on sunshine, and it was impossible not to be swept up in their excitement.”
☕ Coffee or Sweet Tea: Coffee
🐦 Early Bird or Night Owl: Early Bird
🏫 Bonus “Lightning Round”
📚 Favorite Book: Karen Kingsbury Redemption Collection
✈️ Dream Vacation: Lazy days on the White River
🎭 Hidden Talent: “I can spin out of a jacket at the speed of a small white foreign car!”
💬 Favorite Quote: “Talent is God-given — be humble. Fame is man-given — be grateful. Conceit is self-given — be careful.” – John Wooden
😂 Pet Peeve: Being late or slow cars in the fast lane
💙 Favorite Sports Team: Kentucky Wildcats — GO BIG BLUE!
🍗 Favorite Local Restaurant: ZAXBY’S, Baby!
We’re grateful for Mrs. Maynard’s dedication, perseverance, and commitment to doing what’s best for students and staff every day. Her strong work ethic and focus on helping Westover Elementary continue to grow make a lasting impact on the school community.

Today, we’re celebrating our incredible principal, Dr. Brian Norton, at Scotts Hill High School, by asking a few fun questions to get to know him better! 👇
📚 School Life
⭐ If you could teach any class for a day, which one would it be?
“If I could teach any class for a day, it would be Biology — specifically the broad topic of genetics.”
⭐ Who was your favorite teacher growing up?
“My favorite teacher growing up was Ms. Margaret Lumpkin, my third-grade teacher. She made school more fun and engaging than any I had, K–12. She gave A double plusses (A++), had two pet Pekingese dogs in the classroom, and provided a throne for you to sit on for your birthday — where you could choose two friends to join you and didn’t have to do any work that day!
Ms. Margaret hosted a third-grade graduation and later celebrated with us again when we graduated from high school. There was never any doubt she loved us and would do anything for us. She knew our parents, had the support of the whole community, and did all of this while being confined to a wheelchair — and she rarely missed school. I continued to visit her even through my college days. I will honor her until I have no more breath.”
❤️ Personal & Reflective
💡 What inspired you to become a principal?
“Having the opportunity to serve as a parent volunteer at Lincoln Magnet School in Jackson, TN introduced me to Dr. Mavis Johnson — a quiet, powerful leader respected by teachers, students, parents, and the community. So I guess you could say it was a ‘who’ that inspired me to become a principal.”
🌟 Best leadership advice you’ve ever received:
“Control what you can and let go of what you can’t. In the words of Madea, ‘you got to let them go,’ or in the words of Elsa, ‘let it go…’”
☕ Coffee or Sweet Tea: Sweet tea
🦉 Early bird or night owl: Night owl
🏫 Bonus “Lightning Round”
📚 Favorite book: Tuesdays with Morrie
✈️ Dream vacation: A cruise around the world
🎭 Hidden talent: No talent… none!
💬 Favorite quote: “Choose your hard.”
😂 Pet peeve: When parents fix problems that students can solve independently — it undermines confidence and prevents students from building resilience and critical thinking skills.
🏈 Favorite sports teams: Tennessee Titans, Chicago Cubs, and UT Vols Basketball
🍽️ Favorite local restaurant: Saltillo General Store
We’re deeply grateful for Dr. Norton’s steady leadership, integrity, and commitment that make Scotts Hill High School a place of excellence for students and staff alike.

🎃👻 Spooktacular STEM Bus Fun with Mrs. Karissa White! 👻🎃 This week, the STEM Bus brought pumpkin science to life at Bargerton School! Huge thanks to Hamilton Farms for donating pumpkins we carved, carved carefully, and safely experimented with. And a special shoutout to Mr. Tate, school board member, who will be donating the next batch of pumpkins for our upcoming projects! 🧪 Safety first! Everyone had their safety glasses on while learning about science, technology, engineering, and math — all in the spirit of fall fun and Halloween excitement. 💡 STEM Highlights: • Science: Life science and agriculture — exploring fall crops while learning about physical and chemical changes, states of matter, and reactions. • Technology: Using fire, temperature readings, and cameras to record results. • Engineering: Carving airtight pumpkins to trap gases for experiments, while learning pressure, sound, and safe handling. • Math: Measuring pumpkin size, weight, angles for carving, and calculating materials for reactions. It was a spooky, hands-on day of outdoor learning with fall 🍁 all around. Can’t wait to see what pumpkin experiments come next!

We want to give a big shoutout to our amazing LHS & SHHS Roar and Soar Student Tutors who have been helping in our 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms in every school across the county! Your time, patience, and dedication make such a difference every day.

Thank you for being wonderful role models and for supporting our younger students with such enthusiasm and care. We are so proud of the leadership and kindness you show each week!

The National School Lunch Program serves nearly 30 million children every school day. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy established National School Lunch Week to spotlight the importance of a nutritious school lunch—and how it fuels learning and success both in and out of the classroom.
This week, encourage your student to enjoy a world of flavors right in the school cafeteria! 🌍✨
Here’s what’s on the international menu:
Tuesday: Mexican Fiesta
Wednesday: Taste of Italy
Thursday: 🥢 Oriental Express

Henderson County Schools Welcomes Dr. Angela Marshall as New CTE Director
Henderson County Schools is pleased to announce that Dr. Angela Marshall has been named the new Director of Career and Technical Education (CTE).
Dr. Marshall brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, an Ayers Counselor at Scotts Hill High School, and most recently as the Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Ayers Foundation Trust. Her professional journey has shown a strong commitment to student achievement, community partnerships, and expanding opportunities for young people.
“Dr. Marshall’s extensive background in education, along with her proven ability to foster partnerships and connect students to postsecondary opportunities, makes her an outstanding choice to lead our CTE programs,” said Mr. Danny Beecham, Director of Schools. “We are confident she will continue to strengthen career pathways for our students and ensure they are prepared for success in both college and careers.”
In Tennessee public schools, the CTE Director is responsible for overseeing all career and technical programs, developing partnerships with local industries and postsecondary institutions, and ensuring students have access to high-quality pathways that prepare them for the workforce and higher education.
The district also extends its gratitude to Mrs. Lisa Lewis Evans, who recently retired after years of dedicated service as CTE Director. We wish her the very best in her retirement.
Dr. Marshall, alongside her husband of 25 years, is the proud parent of three children. She is deeply rooted in the community and enjoys supporting the Scotts Hill Lions while cheering on her family and local students.

Director Danny Beecham had the privilege of spending time with local author Travis Lewis and hearing the human side of the story behind the development of the lakes in Henderson County, built by the Beech River Watershed Development Authority. His work, When Grown Men Wept, provides an account of how this project developed and the impact it had on those involved. A copy of Mr. Lewis’ book will be placed in each HCS library.
