We are getting into the spirit of the fall season with a decorated pumpkin contest celebrating our favorite books! The contest will be starting Monday, October 23 and ending the Friday of our fall festival, October 27. If your child would like to enter a pumpkin, the entry fee is $3.00. Choose a book that you love and the rest is up to your imagination! The pumpkin CANNOT be cut or carved in any shape, form, or fashion. Pumpkins may be painted, glued, glittered, etc. on the outside. Entry fees and pumpkins must be turned in by Wednesday, October 25th. Pumpkins will be displayed in the library. You may vote for your favorite pumpkin with a ticket that can be purchased from Mrs. Jennifer in the office from 7-7:30 every morning or during your break. Place your ticket in the jar beside your favorite pumpkin. We will end the contest the night of fall festival where parents and relatives may vote.

Mrs. Jessica Simpson's 6th grade ELA class recently completed their novel study on "A Long Walk to Water." They completed body biographies for the two main characters focusing on character traits, plot, and theme. They have also kicked off their Water for South Sudan fundraiser. We’ve surpassed our $300 goal in under a week! A HUGE accomplishment for Mrs. Simpson's ELA classes! Another HUGE accomplishment...over the last 5 years her students have raised nearly $3000 to provide clean drinking water and education to children in South Sudan. ALL ON THEIR OWN! What an amazing feat!

Reading is so important to the academic success of your child. It improves vocabulary, helps them use their imaginations, teaches them empathy, and takes them places they may never get the chance to visit. This October we are doing a schoolwide reading challenge. Complete and color at least 15 challenges and get a treat on Halloween. Complete and color the MOST schoolwide and get a special prize. Remember to take as many AR tests on these books as you can! You make take photos and share them with me at crownover.susan@hcschoolstn.org or post and tag Westover Elementary School, TN on social media. Happy haunted reading!
